Why I Cleared Out 20+ Duplicate Posts (And What It Did for My Analytics)

How Duplicate Content Sneaks Into an Older Blog

When you run a blog for a long time—especially an older site—it is shockingly easy to accumulate duplicate content. Between minor daily updates, similar tracking posts, and overlapping drafts, your archive can become cluttered with competing pages.

Here is a look at why I recently decided to un-publish over 20 redundant posts, how it impacts search engine performance, and why a content cleanup can actually give your blog a breath of fresh air.

 1. How Duplicate Content Sneaks Into an Older Blog

Over years of posting, it's natural to write about similar topics as rates, trends, or tech setups shift. For example, publishing daily updates on volatile metrics (like currency rates or recurring software comparisons) can leave your archive flooded with nearly identical pages that compete against each other for search engine attention. Instead of helping your rankings, these pages split your traffic and confuse search crawlers.

 2. The Decision to Prune (Un-publishing vs. Deleting)

Rather than permanently deleting old content—which can break valuable incoming links—moving redundant pages back to drafts is a safer alternative.

The Strategy: I pulled overlapping pieces out of rotation so search engines stop indexing competing variations of the same topic.

The Future Plan: Those drafts aren't gone forever; they can be heavily reworked, combined into comprehensive guides, or updated with fresh data before seeing the light of day again.

 3. What Happens After the Clean-Up?

When you slim down your published index, a few immediate things happen:

  •  Clearer Crawl Paths: Search engines spend their crawling budget on your strongest, most unique pages rather than getting bogged down by near-identical duplicates.
  •  Better User Experience: Visitors landing on your blog see a cleaner, more authoritative archive rather than a messy list of outdated posts.
  •  A Blank Slate for Creativity: Stepping away from repetitive publishing forces you to focus on writing higher-value, distinct cornerstone content.
