Pakistan–IMF Talks Enter the Final Stretch as PSX Wobbles: What the $1.2 Billion Decision Means for Markets, Prices and Growth

ISLAMABAD / KARACHI, October 6, 2026. Pakistan's talks with the International Monetary Fund are close to a conclusion, and the stock market is not waiting calmly. Negotiators are working through policy language while investors sell on geopolitics and oil, so this week's headlines are really about two different clocks.

Where the talks stand

An IMF team led by Iva Petrova is in Islamabad for the fourth review of the Extended Fund Facility and the third review of the Resilience and Sustainability Facility. A successful outcome would lead to a recommendation to the board to release $1.2 billion across two tranches.

The talks entered the drafting phase when the IMF shared the first draft of the Memorandum of Financial and Economic Policies. The mission is expected to stay until around the middle of this week. If the two sides can't agree on the text, discussions will continue virtually.

A staff-level agreement is only the first step. It still needs Executive Board approval, and current expectations point to a release by the end of November or early December. Nobody should expect dollars in the State Bank's account this month.

The sticking points

The friction is mostly in the energy sector. Power-sector circular debt reached Rs1.675 trillion by the end of June 2026, breaching the agreed target, and the IMF wants measures to stop it growing further. Islamabad has also briefed the Fund on a timeline for private-sector participation in distribution companies, including FESCO, GEPCO and IESCO.

The external numbers are another point of debate. The Fund has reportedly pushed for a higher current account deficit projection for FY2027, with figures of up to $4 billion under discussion, against the Finance Ministry's earlier estimate of about $2.7 billion. The review also lands after a significant revenue shortfall against some programme expectations. Officials have told the mission that the Gulf war and disruption in the Strait of Hormuz cut first-quarter revenue and slowed economic activity.

Why the PSX is nervous

You might expect a nearly finished IMF review to lift the market. This time it isn't, because investors are looking past Islamabad.

On Monday, the KSE-100 fell 2,288 points, or 1.36%, to close at 165,867. Only 8 of its constituents rose while 91 fell, so the selling was broad. Analysts blamed domestic political uncertainty and elevated oil prices. The week before had already been rough: stalled US-Iran negotiations, a global bond sell-off that pushed US Treasury yields to their highest since 2002, and a widening domestic trade deficit pulled the index down 1.5%.

The pattern is familiar. In past IMF cycles, a staff-level agreement was a clear upside trigger. In March 2025, for example, the index jumped over 1,100 points on the news. Today the IMF deal is largely priced in, so the market is reacting to the things the programme can't control: oil, Gulf tensions and global yields.

What it means for inflation

Inflation is the number to watch. The central bank reported that headline inflation rose to 11.1% year-on-year in August, from 9.2% in July, well above its 5–7% medium-term target. On September 14 it kept the policy rate at 11.5%.

IMF conditions push in two directions here:

  • Energy pricing and subsidy reform tend to raise prices in the short run, since removing or trimming subsidies passes costs on to consumers.
  • Fiscal discipline supports the rupee and reserves, which limits imported inflation over time.

The next Monetary Policy Committee meeting is on October 26, and a hold looks more likely than a cut while inflation is this high. The rate decision matters for the stock market as well, because rate-sensitive sectors such as banks and cement react quickly to the central bank's tone.

The growth picture

The macro foundation is better than the market mood suggests. The central bank said FX reserves passed the end-June target of $18 billion, S&P upgraded Pakistan's sovereign rating to "B", and it targets reserves of $20.2 billion by the end of December 2026. Pakistan also posted a primary fiscal surplus of 2.9% of GDP in FY26, above the IMF target, and large-scale manufacturing grew about 5%, its strongest in roughly four years. In July, remittances rose 13% to $3.6 billion.

The weak spot is the external account. Pakistan recorded a current account deficit of $543 million in July–August of FY27, and a prolonged Gulf conflict would hurt trade with GCC countries and could affect remittances from more than a million Pakistani workers there.

The takeaway

For ordinary Pakistanis, the IMF money is less important than the policy conditions that come with it. These talks will shape energy tariffs, tax effort and how much room the government has to support growth.

For investors, the message is to expect noise. A staff-level agreement would remove one risk but not the oil and geopolitical ones. Whatever the final numbers say, the next few weeks will show whether Pakistan's stabilisation can hold through an external shock it can't control.

TTP Strike on Pakistan Border - Many dead

15 militants and an army soldier were killed on Saturday after an ambush on a border post in Pakistan's restive northwestern tribal region.

As per statement of a senior army official "Approximately 200 Taliban militants from across the border assaulted a group of Pakistani posts and not less than 16 militants were killed in the brutal fighting,".

The attack occurred around midnight (10am AEST) in the Bajaur tribal district nearby Afghanistan.

The official confirmed that, "One soldier accepted martyrdom and two other soldiers were injured seriously,".

The official further said that, "The activists of TTP Bajaur and Swat chapters had regrouped in Ghund town of Afghanistan and launched the assault from there,".

Another military official verified the assault and casualties. Bajaur is one of seven semi-autonomous tribal regions affected by the insurgency.

Islamabad filed a protest over the invasion with Afghanistan's deputy ambassador, the Pakistan foreign ministry said in a statement issued on Saturday, and the Pakistani ambassador in Kabul brought up the matter with the Afghan foreign ministry. The statement stated that "To repulse the terrorist attack, Pakistani soldiers answered with artillery and aviation aid. Any claims about shelling on Afghan citizens within Afghanistan are incorrect,".

Due to the fact that the TTP rose up against the Pakistani state in 2007, over 6800 people have been killed in blast and gun attacks around Pakistan.

Nawaz Sharif Visits to Modi's Swearing-in Ceremony

PM Nawaz Sharif Shakes Hands With Modi
On his initial formal day as India’s PM, Narendra Modi met Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

Modi said the both countries could “proceed quickly” to enhance business connections while asking Pakistan to avoid its territory from being used for terrorism against India, Sujatha Singh, the leading official in India’s foreign ministry, told journalists in New Delhi today. Modi approved invitations to go to Pakistan and other countries in the region, she said.

“We want peace and friendly relationships with Pakistan,” Singh said. “On the other hand, for such relations commence, it’s important that terror and violence is brought to a finish.”

In an unmatched move, PM Nawaz Sharif yesterday went to Modi’s swearing-in ceremony along with other politicians of the South Asia Association for Regional Cooperation. Modi’s party this month won a parliamentary vast majority for the 1st time in 30 years.

Boundary issues and terrorist attacks have weakened efforts to carry peace and enhance commerce between India and Pakistan, which have a combined population of over 1.4 billion.

Suspension of Geo Super & Aag By PEMRA is it Good?

Bookmark and Share

Suspension of Geo Super and Aag Tv by the PEMRA is a hot issue in these days and Geo is is showing so much aggression through its broadcasting, web and paper platforms. Geo also launched a public licence scheme for the rehabilitation of the said channels suspension. Besides all differences and disagreements with Geo Network of bloggers like me i.e., Views On Pakistan News, Pakistan Media Watch, Cafe Pyala and Let Us Build Pakistan, I would like to say that what ever the issue but we could not deny the fact that this suspension will curtail the sports and youth activities, the youth of Pakistan gets a platform to show there self through Aag Tv and also through Geo Super. Wherever the Geo Network wrong but the efforts that done by them to rehabilitate the sports in country could not be ignorable, the grounds that always filled either by long grass or from the rainy water have filled with players and with the audience as well and its a healthy sign. After increasing sports activities Pakistan Sports Board started to pay s sum of Rs. 10,000/- to 15,000/- per month to its registered under nineteen cricket team players (I don't know the exact figure but its a fact that a sum nearing the figures above has been paid by the Board). All because of healthy sports activities and its a benefit of young youth who are a vital part and future of any economy or country but always ignored in Pakistan.

By writing these line I am not ignoring the fact that has been pointed out by Cafe Pyala and Pakistan Media Watch nor I am going to filled the licence publicized by the Geo, as I am a law lover man and respect it, so requested here to Geo that do not breach the local laws fulfill the requirements of laws so that sports activities will start again in Pakistan and also requested to PEMRA that show some leniency to over come this issue.

New Philosophy of PM GST Will Control Over Pricing

Bookmark and Share

PM Yousuf Raza Gilani said that GST will reduce over pricing and control the economy, I don't know that by which calculation or formula his new philosophy is based on but I could say and understand that his philosophy will not be acceptable to the brain of a common man. This statement is merely a figure of speech, more or less same in a manner that most of people believe among us that Pervaiz Musharraf will bring the country out of crisis or the corrupt politicians bring their black money back to Pakistan that deposited in Swiss and other foreign accounts, Pervaiz Musharaf quite cigar smoking, Pakistani media starts to show fair picture to public or Nawaz Sharif left the politics.

Statements are the life blood of Pakistani politics and public is now become habitual to this most of us ignore what they listen yesterday or even after one hour but to swallow the bitter pill is a hard task for people like me , they not even remember these statements but explore them publicly.

NFC Award Announced Without Any Conflict

Finally after 13 years of period the most conflicted issue between state and provinces "NFC Award" has been announced without any conflict this time. Its a big success of democracy and especially province Punjab who plays an important role this time by showing elasticity in it's behavior and because of it's leniency this moment could be seen by the nation first time in history.

The previous NFC Award was announced in the regime of Malik Meraj Khalid and had created so many issues and conflicts between provinces and state.

An interesting situation was created when Chief Minister of Sindh Qaim Ali Shah calls the Finance Minister Shaukat Tareen as Shaukat Aziz but after Mr. Tareen reminded him then he said sorry with a smile. Chief Minister of Punjab Shahbaz Sharif said that today is a day of historic importance, as the unanimously approved National Finance Commission Award will bring prosperity to the people of Pakistan. While President Asif Ali Zardari on Friday warmly felicitated the nation and the Federal and all Provincial Governments on reaching a consensus on the 7th National Finance Commission (NFC) Award.

Pakistan is facing very critical condition after facing three consecutive attacks in Lahore, these attacks raises questions and concerns regarding security issues on nuclear-armed Pakistan.

The new complex assaults highlighted the weakness of security forces apparently incapable to prevent high-profile attacks in the heart of Pakistan, in the face of promises of a new offensive against the Taliban near the Afghan border.
